Steve and Val Colvin have 13 children, 8 boys and 5 girls ranging from 18 months to 26 years old. The nine still at home actively help work the farm. From hoeing, mowing, cooking and cleaning, to tending the livestock and harvesting, everybody helps out. We live a healthy lifestyle--working hard outdoors, eating healthy nutritious foods, treating ailments naturally, and living simply--we are an old-fashioned, family operated farm.
In 1999, Steve Colvin purchased 42 mountainous acres of run-down farm in Bledsoe County, TN--fulfilling a life-long dream of raising his kids on his own farm. Known locally as the "old J. B. Swafford Farm," it had passed on to "J.B.'s" grandchildren who had logged it in 1996 and no longer wanted to keep the "old home-place".
Steve and his boys fixed up the old farmhouse temporarily, and started clearing the fields back out. A large garden was started the first year, as was a new farmhouse. In 2003 with the fields back in shape, and the house almost finished, the decision was made to start marketing their Naturally Grown Vegetables through a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program.
Over the next few years they made a name at local restaurants, grocery stores, and markets as producers of top quality, flavorful produce with friendly, knowledgable, service. In 2006 they became one of the first farms in Tennessee to participate in the "Certified Naturally Grown" program--adding consumer confidence to their already established natural methods.
Now becoming known locally as the "Colvin Family Farm," the old "homeplace" is again, an operating family farm.
